Janmashthami

The celebration of Janmasthami marks the birth of Lord Krishna about 5000 years ago in the city of Mathura.

Krishna is considered to be the 8th avatar of Vishnu

Krishna is celebrated globally as the 8th incarnation of Lord Vishnu born to Vasudeva and Devaki while they were imprisoned by Kansa, the evil ruler of Mathura.

Janmasthami is celebrated all over the world with great pomp and fervor. On this day the temples of Krishna are decorated with flowers and processions take over the streets by Krishna devotees accompanied by Bhajan, Kirtan and Satsang. Meetings take place in various places where the recitation of Bhagavata Purana and Bhagavad Gita are organized.

Lord Krishna, for the Hindus is a God, charmer, savior, leader but most importantly a friend, guide and teacher. Krishna is considered by most to be the complete incarnation of Vishnu and the image of a mischievous child eating butter or playing flute.

Krishna was the charioteer of Arjun in the battle of Kurukshetra and it was here that most believe, the Bhagvad Gita was first narrated by him to Arjun.

The celebrations in Mathura start a week before Janmasthami and the place is considered one of the sites that grant salvation to its pilgrims, along with Kanchi, Ayodhya, Puri, Dwarka and Kashi.
